Making the decision to have LASIK
The decision to have LASIK is not a decision that should be taken lightly. As with any medical procedure, having all of the facts can help you make an informed decision regarding whether this is the best procedure for your particular situation.
ARE YOU A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LASIK?
It should be understood that while LASIK can help many people eliminate the need to wear glasses or use contacts, it is not for everyone. Often ophthalmologists can restore vision to a point where the patient is really satisfied, regardless of the common—but not always useful—measure of being able to read 20/20 on the Snellen visual acuity chart. These patients are often referred to as “20/Happy.” Therefore, it’s important to determine whether you are a good candidate for LASIK and to make sure you, and your surgeon, agree to vision achievement goals.
MARKET-TO-METHOD DISPARITY
Before we delve into whether you are personally a good candidate for LASIK, it’s important to first discuss what is known as market- to-method disparity and understanding 20/20 vision. Most people think that when it comes to vision, 20/20 is the goal. There’s even a cliché about hindsight being 20/20. There is a better, healthier way to look at it.
