Glaucoma Eye Drops

(Lumigan, Alphagan or Combigan)

Prescription eye drops for Glaucoma help maintain the pressure in your eye at a healthy level and are an important part of the treatment routine for many people. Be sure your doctor knows about any other drugs you may be taking (including over-the-counter items like vitamins, aspirin, and herbal supplements) and about any allergies you may have.

As any medications, these eye drops have side effects which can be tolerated by the many patients but some times due to general health of the patient, some types of eye drops can not be given. To minimize this side effect you should decrease the amount of eye drops that is absorbed to your blood stream by pressing on the corner or medial side of your eye near the nose after you apply the eye drops, so you can decrease the amount of drug that pass through the nasolacrimal ducts in which it can pass to your blood stream.

Durysta ®

the first implant to replace glaucoma drops

Durysta is the first implant to replace glaucoma eye drops. Brennan P. Greene, MD, along with our clinical trials team, participated in the clinical trials that led to Durysta gaining FDA approval. This implant is painless and is inserted by our physicians, in our office, in just moments.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

In Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) laser energy is delivered to the drainage system of the eye, the trabecular meshwork. This treatment is extremely safe and is well tolerated by patients. The SLT technique is very gentle, and studies show that it does not damage the tissue of the drainage system. This glaucoma treatment takes only minutes to apply, and there is usually no discomfort felt by the patient. Following the laser treatment, one usually continues any existing glaucoma drops. After several weeks a follow up appointment will be required to evaluate the intraocular pressure. We will then determine how successful the procedure has been.

Glaukos iStent

The iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass Stent System is sanctioned for people with glaucoma who also have a cataract. The stent, along with surgery to remove the cataract, is designed to prevent damage to the optic nerve caused by high pressure inside the eye.

iStent is the first MIGS device that improves your eye's natural fluid outflow to safely lower eye pressure by creating a permanent opening in the trabecular meshwork. The iStent has been proven safe and effective.

iStent is the smallest medical device ever approved by the FDA. It is placed in your eye during cataract surgery and is so small that you won't be able to see or feel it after the procedure is over. iStent is designed to create a permanent opening in your trabecular meshwork, and works continuously to improve the outflow of fluid from your eyes to help control eye pressure.

What makes a good iStent candidate?

• Existence of a cataract and the need to remove the cataract

• Suitable for patients whose intraocular pressure is either uncontrolled or borderline controlled by other glaucoma treatment options.

• Suitable for patients who want to reduce their eye drop medication and have the existence of a cataract.

* Patients with narrow anterior chamber angles or those with severe glaucoma are not appropriate candidates for the iStent.
