Who is a Good Candidate for LASIK?
The results you achieve from LASIK will vary based on a number of factors
While millions of people have reported a great deal of satisfaction with LASIK eye surgery, it is not right for everyone. In general, individuals who undergo LASIK are able to achieve at least 20/25 vision. This works well for most activities and is acceptable for most people, but it should be understood that you might still need glasses for reading or driving at night as you grow older.
The results you achieve from LASIK will vary based on a number of factors, including your refractive error, which we’ll discuss in more detail later on. Individuals with mild nearsightedness usually experience the most success with this procedure. By comparison, people who have a high degree of farsightedness or nearsightedness in addition to astigmatism may have less predictable results. Laser eye surgery tends to be most appropriate for patients who have no unusual vision problems and who have a moderate degree of refractive error.
There are certain conditions that can cause poor surgery outcomes or possible complications:
Any eye disease that causes progressive vision deterioration
Thin corneas
Eye infections
Lid disorders or eye injuries
Large pupils
Age-related eye changes
Additionally, LASIK may not be appropriate for you if you have fairly good vision. If you are able to see well enough that you only require glasses or contacts part-time, you may find that the improvement offered by surgery is not worth the associated risks.
