What is causing flashing in my vision?

Understanding retinal detachment?

Our team describes retinal detachment as the process of the pulling of the retina away from the normal position at the back of the eyeball. When the retinal cells are separating from the layer of blood vessels that provide nourishment to the eyes, it can result in permanent vision loss in the eye without effective diagnosis and treatment.

What are the warning signs of retinal detachment?

In addition to experiencing flashes in the eyes, such as flickering or brightness occurring in the peripheral vision, patients may also notice a dramatic increase in floaters or reduced vision. A reduction in peripheral vision may also become noticeable, and vision may be blurred or shadowed. Visiting an ophthalmologist as soon as possible is the best way to ensure the least amount of damage to one’s vision.

What factors increase my risk of developing retinal detachment?

It can be difficult to determine the cause of retinal detachment, though doctors have found over the years that patients with certain conditions or experiences may be at a greater risk of developing this condition. Some of these factors include:

• A patient’s age

• Previous eye surgeries or injuries

• Severe nearsightedness

• Previous retinal detachment

• Family history of retinal detachment

• Eye diseases or disorders including uveitis or lattice degeneration
