What’s the Size of Your Pupil, and Why Does That Matter for LASIK?

In determining whether you are a suitable candidate for LASIK, it’s important to consider the size of your pupil. This is because larger pupils can cause interference with surgical results. Patients with larger pupils have a tendency to experience side effects following their surgery. These are some of the common side effects:

  • Halos & Glares

  • Double vision

  • Starbursts

Such effects can be quite debilitating and even prevent patients from being able to drive in bad weather or at night. For this reason, your pupil size will be measured during your initial consultation and exam and will assist in determining whether you are a good candidate for this procedure.

THICK OR THIN CORNEAS?

Another common factor that disqualifies many people from being good candidates for LASIK is the thickness of their corneas. Generally speaking, if you have thin corneas, you would not qualify for laser eye surgery. When LASIK is performed on thin corneas, complications can arise. Every situation is different, but in some cases, if you do not qualify for LASIK because of thin corneas, you, along with your surgeon, might find that PRK is a better option.

CORNEAL SCARRING

Individuals may also be disqualified from LASIK if they have corneal scarring. This type of scarring could result from previous eye surgery or an eye injury. The presence of corneal scarring can be determined during a presurgical eye exam.
