Total Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024: Don’t Wear Fake Eclipse Glasses

There are great options for taking in the upcoming solar eclipse but don’t damage your vision with fake glasses.

Here’s how to identify the real ones:

  • The inside of the frame will bear the ISO code 12312-2

  • On a clear day, you should be able to wear them while looking at the sun to observe some features of the surface of the sun

  • Reputable brand names include Celestron, Lunt, Soluna, and Oilkas

If you saved your old solar eclipse glasses and they are not scratched, you can use them again. To make sure they still block harmful rays, hold them up to indoor light; if you can barely see they are still safe.

Remember, if you choose to view the eclipse without approved glasses, you can damage your retinas, leading to solar retinopathy. While some people recover from the condition in three to six months, others never regain full vision.
