The Eye Care Institute has partnered with Spencerian College in offering a course for training of Ophthalmic Assistants. The curriculum is designed at the Certificate level and takes 6 months day program plus 120 hour externship or 9 months night program plus 120 hour externship to complete. This partnership came about to address the shortage of trained Ophthalmic Assistants in the region. “The aging of our current population along with the growing number of diabetic persons needing eye care only confirms the fact we are in need of quality ophthalmic personnel” remarked Mark Prussian, Chief Executive Officer. “We feel the entire Louisville ophthalmic community will benefit by having access to trained professionals.” In addition to designing the curriculum, The Eye Care Institute is also offering its facility and equipment for use during the lab component and the externship requirements for this Certificate. Spencerian College students will spend 4 hours per week doing clinical lab training for the Ophthalmic Techniques course onsite at The Eye Care Institute, and perform a 120 hour clinical externship at The Eye Care Institute after all classes are completed. The course will be offered at Spencerian College beginning with the January 2008 quarter.
