Story Avenue Park, a small city park, at the corner of Story Avenue and I-64 will be expanded and improved thanks to the generosity of many interested Butchertown residents and businesses, including The Eye Care Institute.

The park sits on a few acres of land facing The Eye Care Institute.  With limited use, and a limited parks department budget, the parks department had not made this park a high priority.

The abandoned former Boys and Girls Club sits within the boundaries of Story Avenue Park.  Funds have been donated to Louisville Metro Parks Foundation to tear down the vacant, deteriorating building and return the land to open space within the park.  Demolition began on April 12, 2013 and the land should be clear within two weeks.  This is known as Phase 1.

Funding is also in place for a landscape architect to design a park renovation, and to fund the first small portion of the park improvements.  Further, MSD has committed to planting new trees that are appropriate for the park.  All of this work, known as Phase II, should happen before the end of 2013.

A community open meeting showing options for Phase II of Story Avenue Park will be held at The Eye Care Institute during June 2013.

The Eye Care Institute has attempted to make exterior improvements each year since moving to Butchertown in 2005.  Removal of the vacant building, coupled with the opportunity to partner with neighbors to invigorate an old park appears to management to be a vital improvement to this neighborhood.
