Once you have undergone LASIK surgery, it’s important to know your next steps. Planning your recovery day can help reduce stress after your procedure.
After LASIK, you may feel a little wobbly, so it is important that you have a friend or family member with you to help you get home. Your eyes will be covered with shields and a big pair of plastic sunglasses. Go slow, take your caregiver’s hand and settle into the car. Now close your eyes and breathe deeply, the hard part is over.
After LASIK Surgery
- Go to bed. Rest, sleep, relax, chill out or laze around for at least 24 hours.
- Wear the eye shields while sleeping for the first week following your procedure. This will ensure that you do not inadvertently rub or scratch your eyes in the night.
- Use the eyedrops. You will be given eye drops that help relieve any dryness or sensitivity you may experience. Continue to use the eyedrops until you don’t need them any more. Some people only use them for a few weeks.
- Follow-up appointments are important. Be sure and get to all of them. Part of the price of the procedure is the excellent care you will receive post-surgery. Bring questions for your doctor; he or she is an expert in helping patients through the LASIK process.
Don’t be disappointed or alarmed if your vision is not immediately perfect. It may take a few days or a couple of weeks for the eyes to adjust and settle into their new capacity. Within a short period of time you will be ecstatic over the freedom of being to see without correction.
It is so amazing to wake up and not have to reach for glasses or stick contacts in your eyes. LASIK is truly a miracle of modern science. After a full day’s rest you should be good to go and may resume your normal activities. Go to school, work, take care of your family. Just go easy with anything around your eyes and rest every chance you get. It was a lot to experience and you need time to integrate the new, better-seeing you!
More than 4,000,000 Americans have already had LASIK. Getting the LASIK procedure can be one of the absolute best things you ever do for yourself. Go for it and SEE. ©
