When Might LASIK Enhancements be needed?

There is no reason to panic if your vision is not immediately clear following LASIK laser vision surgery. When evaluating your visual acuity following laser vision surgery, it is important to be patient. Most people are able to see much better without eyeglasses the day after the procedure, but it is not uncommon for vision to fluctuate for up to several weeks following the surgery. Your vision will need to be monitored by your eye doctor for several weeks to several months following the procedure.

Some people do feel uncomfortable driving or during other visual tasks following their procedure. It is important that you tell your eye doctor if this happens. You may need to have new eyeglasses prescribed to wear part time until your vision has improved and stabilized. If you notice that your vision still seems blurry three months after your procedure, it is possible that you might need an enhancement. It will be necessary for your corneas to be reevaluated using the same techniques as prior to your first procedure in order to determine whether you are a good candidate for an enhancement. Among the most important factors is whether your corneas are thick enough to allow for a second procedure.

LASIK enhancements differ from the original procedure because a flap does not need to be created. Instead of a laser being used to create the corneal flap, specialized tools will instead be used to re-lift the flap, which only takes a couple of minutes. An excimer laser can then be used to reshape your cornea. In most enhancements, only minimal reshaping of the cornea is necessary. Patients will usually need to follow the same postop instructions as were provided for their primary procedure. It is crucial that you follow those instructions in order to ensure a good outcome and reduce the risk of infection.
